If your binding is going to be white and you are going to scrape it down, I would spray a washcoat before scraping the binding. If you have to grainfill yet, and you want to protect the stain, use a washcoat before grain filling.Īlso. the color is similar, but the grain get obscured, and there is very little depth. the red and brown mix on the surface of the guitar. the end effect is a deep, dark cherry red color that has a lot of depth, like looking into a glass of merlot. then i spray several more coats of trans cherry red and 12 coats of clear. the two mix in the washcoat, not so much on the wood. then when you add the first coat of cherry red. ![]() The washcoat pulls some of the brown stain out of the wood. I grainfill with dark walnut grainfiller and this stains the whole guitar to the color of a turd!!! Then i spray a very very light washcoat of clear, a very light sanding to get rid of nibs and such and then hit it with trans cherry red. I do not use a washcoat before grain filling. In the Case of TV yellow, the washcoat is actually white! In some cases, like when grain filling with a darker color to accentuate the grain, but not wanting to stain the wood itself, a washcoat is sprayed before the grain filler, thus protecting the wood from absorbing the stain in the grain filler. sometimes you want this, sometimes you don't. and this can have the effect of giving the color more depth and slightly lighter. Nitro will also "lift" some of the stain our of the guitar during the first coat or two. for that I use a light cut of shellac under nitro. for proper adhesion over oily woods for example. However, sometimes you need a "barrier" coat. I just don t trust dissimilar materials used as a sealer. thinned nitro sinks into wood really well and thus, does not chip off as easily as a coating that mechannically adheres to a sanded surface. Therefore, I like the nitro to be my sealer, color and clear coats. ![]() Nitro burns into itself and makes finish that can basically be thought of as one coat even though you spray 16 layers. ![]() In general, I do not use a dissimilar washcoat under nitro. A washcoat is generally used as a protective layer, or a "lockdown" layer.
